Biography

Service number 0-062082.
William John Millican was the commanding officer on USS Escolar (SS-294). Lost at sea, cause unknown.
The USS Escolar was a Balao-class submarine and was comissioned under the command of Millican on 2nd June 1944. The ship left on her first patrol on 18th September 1944 with USS Croaker (SS-246) and USS Perch (SS-313) for a Wolf-pack action in the Yellow Sea. Commander Millican was appointed as leader of the Wolf-pack operation. A last radio message from the USS Escolar was received on a listening station on 30th September 1944. The USS Perch and USS Croacker have reported normal messages with the ship after that, until on 17th October USS Perch received a call where she gave her position. After this nothing was ever heard of the ship. Ship and crew were reported missing, probably lost on 27th November 1944. Most probably the ship was actually lost on 17th October.
