For having distinguished himself by performing eminent acts of courage, tact and loyalty. On May 10, 1940, he and a few soldiers under his personal command, stormed and captured the bridge across the Ouden Rijn at Katwijk and the house opposite. The house was occupied by German soldiers who had set up a machinegun nest inside, making the further advance of the battalion impossible and which consequently had to be destroyed at any cost.
