Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Boatswain’s Mate First Class
Unit:
U.S. Navy
Citation:
"For extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as a gunner's mate on a United States carrier operating in the vicinity of Formosa Island on 21 January 1945. While the ship was under heavy Japanese air attack he took charge of a 20 MM battery and courageously directed his men under an intense strafing and bombing attack. Although severely wounded, with indomitable tenacity he dragged himself into a magazine endangered by fires, to turn on the sprinkler system. He then applied a tourniquet to a shipmate whose leg was blown off. His courage and disregard for his own safety were at all times in keeping with highest traditions of the naval service"
