"During four consecutive months initially as a ship - later as a group-commander of a group Catalina fly boats of Hr.Ms. Marine Luchtvaartdienst given proof of particular competence, initiative, high morals, special service and endurance during several hundreds of flying hours at many flights above hostile area and more in particular:
a. On February 1st 1942 in the area of Tandjong Priok a successful attack was done on hostile submarine, which was probably sunk.
b. On February 13th 1942 when he in Hr.Ms. flyboat Y 55 above the South-Chinese Sea found three heavy protected Japanese convoys and was attacked by enemy fighter planes, during the fighting one and possibly two of these fighters were shot down. Heavily damaged, Y 55 was saved by diving from 5500 m. altitude in a steep dive flight to a cloud bank on 200 m. altitude."
