Biography

Nikolai Stepin went into military service when he joined the Artillery Officers School in Leningrad. He started his operational dutie in the Kharkov Military District as a latoon commander. In very short time he was promoted to chief of staff with an artillery squadron and served as chief of staff within several artillery regiments from May 1943 until the end of the war.

In the spring of 1945, Stepin was involved in a battle on the banks of the Oder, north of Kustrin. On April 15th, his unit destroyed 18 enemy strongpoints, three observation posts and surpressed the fire of five enemy artillery batteries. This way his unit paved the way for the infantry assault the next day. For his part in the action, Stepin received the award.
