After the Empire Star had left the harbour of Singapore on February 12th 1942, she was en route to Batavia attacked. The ship carried over 2100 passengers. During the attacks the ship received three direct hits. During one of the attacks, two of the Staff nurses on board, Vera Torney and Margaret Anderson went on deck in order to help the wounded. They protected them with teir own bodies. For this action nurse Torney received the MBE and nurse Margaret Anderson the George Medal.
