In the last half of 1944 Tellgmann was escorting a convoy when it came under attack from British torpedo boats. He and his crew played a major role in ensuring that this attack could be fended off, with the result that 4 of the 6 attacking British ships were sunk and another heavily damaged. He was rewarded with the Knight's Cross and a mention in the Wehrmachtbericht of 07.10.1944.
