Biography

RAF servicenumber 135896.
Roger Duchateau was born on June 1st 1914 in Wonck, near Liège. He started his military training at the Royal Military School on November 16th 1934 after which he was placed with the 1st Air Regiment (1e Luchtvaart Regiment/1re Rgt. d’Aéronautique) on June 25th 1937. On October 30th he received his Observer wing. On March 14th 1939 he received his pilot wing and was placed with the 2nd Air Regiment (2e Luchtvaart Regiment/2me Rgt. Aéronautique, April 1st 1939).

When the German Army invaded his country, he followed his unit to France. After the surrender of the Belgian Army, Roger Duchateau went back to Belgium. On June 14th 1942 he fled through Gibraltar toward Great Britain and joined the Royal Air Force. After training he was placed with the No. 41 Squadron on May 31st 1943. On June 11th followed a transfer to No. 349 Squadron. Finally he was transferred to the Belgian No 350 Squadron on March 1st 1944.

On October 1st 1946 he ended his service with the RAF and took up service with the Belgian Air Force. On October 1st 1953 he was retired. Roger Duchateau died in Tenerife on January 21st 1989.
