As a supply platoon warehouse leader Kafanov labored day and night to deliver supplies to the units, including combat units located near Komarov Farm on 17 January 1943. The enemy attacked Aleksandrovsky Farm, where the supply platoon was located, attempting to cut the combat units from the rear area. Food supply was further complicated by aerial bombing, but due to the leadership and bravery of Kafanov, hot food was delivered to the combat units on time.
