The following wartime excerpt (dated 30.08.1940) describes why Lindemann received the Knight’s Cross…

“Generalleutnant Lindemann had previously led his Division with distinction during the fighting near Zweibrücken. His Division would later form the attacking spearhead of his Armeekorps during the attack on Luxembourg and southern Belgium. Under his leadership the Division succeeded in breaking through the Maginot Line near Douzy on the 15.05.1940. Generalleutnant Lindemann would continue to distinguish himself during the subsequent heavy fighting along the flank of the Maginot Line. His achievements culminated on the evening of the 14.06.1940 when he and his men completed the seizure of the vaunted Hill 304 and the ‘Dead Man’. The capture of these two locations enabled the swift subsequent capture of Fortress Verdun.”

Under the leadership of General of the Cavalry Lindemann, troops of the Army and Waffen-SS, including Spanish, Dutch and Flemish volunteer units, excellently supported by the Air Fleet of Colonel-General Keller, after months of bitter fighting under difficult weather and terrain conditions, these hostile armies, were first sealed off from their communication and supply lines, then crowded together more and more, and today finally destroyed.

In the third battle south of Lake Ladoga, German troops standing under the command of Field Marshal Küchler, Colonel General Lindemann and General of Infantry Wöhler, supported by Air Force organizations led by the Luftwaffe General Korten, in the period of 22 July to 6 August have heroically thwarted the assault of the 8th and 67th Soviet army and prevented the breakthrough intentions of the enemy.
