Aleksandr Yevgenyevich Golovanov joined the Red Army in 1919. During the Civil War he operated with the 59th Rifle Regiment. In September 1920 he was demobilized. In 1924 he joined the OGPU and worked in the Moscow Military District from October 1925 and from August 1930 in Alma Ata. In December 1931 he joined the Committee for Heavy Industry and started studying flying. After his primary flight training he worked wit the Civil Air Fleet (GVF), became commander of the Special Section for Heavy Aircraft in 1934 and Chief Pilot with Aeroflot in 1938. He was both involved in the Battle of Khalkhin-Gol and the Soviet-Finish War.
In February 1941 he became the commander of the 212th Long Range Bomber Regiment, in August 1941 he became commander of the 81st Long Range Bomber Division, subordinated directly to the Stavka of the Supreme High Command and he was named the commander of Long Range Aviation in February 1942.
He became Marshal of Aviation (the youngest person in the history of the USSR to hold that rank) on 3rd August 1943 and was promoted to Chief Marshal of Aviation (the second after Aleksandr Novikov) on 19th August 1944.
In 1948 he was removed from his post and send to the General Staff Academy and served as comander of an Airborne Corps before het was placed in Reserves in 1953.
