The following newspaper article (dated 16./17.01.1943) describes why Mohr received the Oakleaves…
“35 Ships with 188000 GRT Sunk:
The Führer likewise awarded the Oakleaves to Kapitänleutnant Johann Mohr, captain of a U-Boat, as the 177th soldier to be so honoured.
Kapitänleutnant Mohr sunk the British cruiser ‘Dunedin’ (4850 GRT) as well as 16 armed enemy merchant ships with 103405 GRT. After being awarded the Knight’s Cross on the 27.03.1942, Kapitänleutnant Mohr went on to sink an additional 17 armed enemy merchant ships with 84600 GRT. Kapitänleutnant Mohr is a brilliant U-Boat captain who demonstrated outstanding tactical acumen right from his very first war patrol, during which he attacked two heavily guarded convoys that were en-route to Gibraltar. Mohr’s outstanding successes are attributable to the bold and skillful employment of his U-Boat as well as his mastery of any situation.”
177th Award.
