Herbert Schultze joined the Reichsmarine in May 1930, served during his trainings period on several warships and in May 1937 he transferred to the U Boat Force. On April 22nd 1939 Schultze took command of the newly build U 48 and he stayed in command of the U 48 till July 28th 1941. During this period Kapitänleutnant Schultze was 227 days at sea, made eight combat patrols and sank 26 ships with a total tonnage of 169.709 BRT. He also damage one British tanker of 9.456 BRT.

On July 28th 1941 Schultze was promoted to commander of the 3rd Flotilla which was based in La Rochelle. In March 1942 he became an Admiral Staff Officer for U Boats with "Marinegruppe Nord" and in December of that same year he joined Admiral Dönitz’s staff. In March 1944 Korvettenkapitän Schultz left this staff function en received a leading position in the Marinekreigsschule Mürwik. (naval war college) He kept this position to the end of the war.

After the war Herbert Schultze served from July 1956 till his retirement in September 1968 in the Bundesmarine.
