During the crossing over the Dnieper north of Dubossari, on the 25.07.1941, the attacking 50. Infanterie-Division found itself up against strongly fortified bunker positions. However under Hollidt’s leadership the Division was able to break through the Soviet defenses following bitter fighting that lasted several days. Hollidt distinguished himself during this combat by his continual interventions in the fighting that time and again managed to get bogged down attacks back into motion. He would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross in recognition of this feat.

Awarded for his outstanding leadership of Armee-Abteilung Hollidt during the winter of 1942/43. Despite the vast Soviet numerical superiority and the ad-hoc nature of his forces, Hollidt and his men put up remarkable resistance in no small part due to Hollidt’s confident and flexible command. The Soviets proved unable to achieve a breakthrough against Hollidt’s Armee-Abteilung during its staged withdrawal from the Chir to the Mius river.
