"For extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer, Company G, 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 1 August 1944, in France. During a heavy counterattack upon his company's positions, Captain Gooley braved intense artillery, mortar and machine gun fire to organize and lead an attack upon two tanks spearheading the hostile assault. After personally destroying a machine gun providing security for the tanks, Captain Gooley advanced in the face of heavy fire toward one of the tanks and disabled it with hand grenades. His heroic actions resulted in blocking the hostile advance and permitted his company to continue its attack to the assigned objective. Captain Gooey's gallant leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 28th Infantry Division, and the United States Army."
