Awarded for his actions during the German approaches to Leningrad in 1941. His Division played a key role in pushing Soviet forces back across the line Peterhof-Petrowskaja. This was of crucial importance for the prosecution of the war near Leningrad, as it enabled German heavy artillery to be positioned within range of the Petersburg tank factory, the Kronstadt fortress and the Soviet battleships adjacent to this island.
