The following press release describes why Otto Nordt received the Knight’s Cross…
“The Führer has at the recommendation of the Supreme Commander of the Kriegsmarine, Großadmiral Dönitz, awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross to Kapitänleutnant Otto Nordt, commander of a minesweeper flotilla. During the first days of September he led back the last naval security forces from the area west of the Dover strait under the most difficult of conditions, the latter including battles with enemy cruisers, destroyers, MTBs and omnipresent fighter-bombers. By doing this he saved many valuable forces for the further prosecution of the naval war.
Kapitänleutnant Nordt had already distinguished himself on multiple occasions while in command of R-Boats, which he lead with skill and bravery. He achieved great successes in countless battles with destroyers and light craft through his decisiveness and maritime skills, in this time sinking 5 light craft and heavily damaging at least 6 more. He was decorated with the German Cross in Gold just three weeks ago.”
