On the 19.01.1944 the Soviets attacked the positions of the III./Grenadier-Regiment 67, achieving local penetrations. The Germans fought desperately to hold off assaults that continued until the next day. When the Bataillon was finally ordered to pull back Lösing stayed behind as a rearguard, covering the retreat of his comrades with an MG despite being wounded. He would further demonstrate his bravery and willingness to fight by participating in a counterattack later on, which resulted in the prevention of a Soviet breakthrough and the consequent orderly withdrawal of the German forces. He would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross for his actions during this difficult engagement.
