Otto Hoffmann von Waldau was killed in an aircrash near Petric on 17th May 1943 as Befehlshaber des Luftwaffenkommandos Südost and with the rank of General der Flieger.

“General Hoffmann von Waldau has been awarded the Knight’s Cross by the Führer in recognition of his achievements while serving as Fliegerführer Afrika. In this capacity he and his subordinated formations decisively contributed to many great successes being achieved, in particular the capture of Fortress Tobruk.”
