"On a number of occasions during the campaign in Burma, Sergeant Spiers distinguished himself for his resource and coolness under fire. At MOULMEIN, on 31st.January 1942, his gun position was attacked by a superior force of enemy infantry. Although heavily outnumbered he engaged the enemy with rifle fire, organised local resistance from his trench and inflicted casualties during the ensuing bayonet encounter. This resistance enabled survivors to warn the gun detachment nearby.
At PROME on 30th.May 1942, his good judgement was instrumental in beating off attack after attack by enemy fighters at SHWEYGIN; on 10th.May 1942, he was responsible for destroying an enemy field gun. He never failed in his consideration for his detachment, insisting on marching with them to India, although he himself was very ill."
