"Feldwebel Gammel decorated himself at the breakthrough at Policzo with the I. / Grenadier-Regiment 6 by excellent boldness, insight and bravery. Durin gthe period from 21st September until 28th September, Gammel lay in an ambush in the mine infested frontline, hereby often only some metres away form the Russian lines. Alone lying in the frontline, Gammel cleared the area of mines, often under enemy fire, thus making it possible to place Spanish Riders. In the fullfilling of his duty, together with a Gefreiter, they stumbled on a Russian unit, chasing them away and capturing this way a machinegun and several cases of ammunition. Gammel took part in the First World War and received the EK II in 1939 at the Westwall as one of the first in his battalion."
