The following newspaper excerpt (dated 03.01.1942) describes why Weyel received the Knight’s Cross…
“During the Western Campaign Oberleutnant Weyel earned both classes of Knight’s Cross while also being severely wounded. Now in the more recent fighting in the Eastern Campaign he has once again proven himself as a masterful leader of his troops. In the area southeast of Peterhof he personally decided to strike beyond his attack objective, and under the strongest of defensive fire from the land batteries and warships of Kronstadt Fortress he was able to seize the heights at Vol Ssimonogont [?]. This feat was of decisive importance for the successful combat during the subsequent days of combat.”
