"For outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty.
On 28th Oct. '42 C. Coy took part in an attack on prepared Jap positions in the hills above EORA CREEK. Two pls attacked one of which was commanded by Lieut HODDINOT. The position was a difficult one, and necessitated moving through a thick curtain of jungle with no observation, then attacking upon well dug-in positions surrounded by cleared fire-lanes. Lieut Hoddinott took command and so inspired his men by his personal bravery, dash and skilful leadership, that the attack was successfully pushed home in the face of extremely heavy machine gun fire, penetrating to the centre of the enemy position.
Casualties were suffered, including the commander of the other paltoon. Lieut Hoddinott then gathered his remaining men, staved off a determined counter attack and successfully evacuated all his wounded. Enemy casualties were in excess of 30 killed. ?? and the success of this action contributed to the general withdrawal of the enemy from EORA CREEK."
