"Your extreme bravery while under enemy fire, although greatly outnumberd, and your gallantry anddevotion to fellow crewman, will long be rememberd. By refusing to leave your ship (PVI-2) when it was afire and four of its six man crew were wounded, you not only showed great personal bravery, but upheld the highest tradition of the United States Navy. Your handling of this badly crippled plane, for the wounded pilot and co-pilot and your initial landing of it is a fact that will not soon be forgotten."

"For distinguishing himself by meritious acts while participation in aerial flight and his disregard for his personal safety to save the life of his fellow aircrewman. During the period of extreme danger on 10 June 1944, while he was serving as combat aircrewman on a Navy Ventura Bomber, he participated in extremely hazardous night bombing and strafing missions under adverse weather conditions. While flying at low altitudes over New Ireland, he contributed to the destruction of buildings, enemy supply dumps, gun installations and bivouac aereas, and his singlehanded destruction of two enemy fighters, his skill and personal courage, coupled with his devotion to duty, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
