Recommendation:
On the 1st April 1945 "D" Company of the Black Watch (RHR) of Canada was attacking a high wooded feature to the left of the town of Terborg, Holland. Strong enemy fire was encountered as the Company approached the feature and the whole Company was pinned down to the ground. There were a number of casualties including two Platoon Commanders.
Cpl. Stacey of 17 Platoon on learning that his Platoon Commander was wounded, realized that he as next senior must take command and commit his platoon in a manner which would extricate the balance of the company from this serious position.
He decided on a plan to move his platoon on a right flanking movement which would draw and contain the enemy fire, and allow the company to continue their advance.
At great personal risk under fire, he went from one section to another and explained his plan, and then led his platoon in the movement which produced the results he had anticipated. The whole company was thus able to continue the advance to their objective and hold it. The whole operation was successful and the company took 28 prisoners.
The courage, leadership and skill which Corporal Stacey exhibited on this occasion served as an inspiration to all the company.
