Major Mitchell (then Captain) was in charge of a Forward Observation Party. During the operation, he never ceased his efforts to maintain communications with his bombarding ship and support the Army ashore by every means. On several occasions he lead his party many miles ahead of our leading fire. He overcame all obstacles, once capturing a road block containing 2 anti-tank guns and 20 men.
The action took place during Operation Husky between the places Ispica and Modica, Province of Ragusa, region of Sicily, Italy.
