- No.2 Troop, "A" Squadron, 10th Armoured Regiment (The Fort Garry Horse), 2nd Canadian Armoured Brigade, Canadian Army
Recommendation:
On 11 June 1944 Captain D.M. McPherson was Troop Leader of 2 Troop, A Squadron, 10 Canadian Armoured Regiment. The regiment had been ordered to clear the valley south to and including the village of Rots, 2 Troop being ordered into the village itself.
The enemy defence consisted of infantry and tanks which resisted tenaciously any attempt made to dislodge them. Penetration was made into the town but the necessity of fighting in such close quarters was not without cost. Five of our tanks were hit and several personnel of the crews were wounded. In spite of being wounded himself, Captain McPherson remained with his men, rendered first aid, rallied the remaining tanks and organized them so skillfully that the village was held until assistance arrived at first light the following morning.
Even though wounded the leadership and gallantry exhibited by Captain McPherson in the face of enemy fire, made possible the success of the operation and enabled the holding of vital ground.
Awarded with vermillion star.
