On 15 August 1944 at Soulangy, near Falaise, France, Lieutenant Herbert Arthur Dyson, 1st Battalion Royal Winnipeg Rifles commanded 7 Platoon “A” Company, which was part of an advance guard during the advance on Falaise. At Soulangy a SS battle group was encountered. In the ensuing action Lieutenant Dyson led his platoon to its objective inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy, while the remainder of the company was still fighting to clear the entire objective. An enemy Mark IV tank counter-attacked, and Lieutenant Dyson directed the fire of the PIAT which knocked it out. By this time the company was divided into two groups. One consisted of 7 platoon and about 12 men from 8 platoon, and the other consisted of the remainder of the company. Commanding the first group Lieutenant Dyson held his objective.
As a result of this action and chiefly due to Lieutenant Dyson’s courageous and skilful leadership, the enemy withdrew and the advance continued.
