Recommendation:
During the action of the Westminster Regiment (Motor) on the Melfa River on the 24th May 1944, the section to which Private Culling belonged was overrun by enemy tanks and self propelled guns. Private Culling shot and killed the crew commander of one of the self-propelled guns and then in full view of the other enemy tanks and guns, lobbed a 36 grenade into the turret killing the driver. The remainder of the crew dismounted and ran for cover. Private Culling wounded two and took the other one prisoner.
Although under fire all the time, Private Culling showed absolute disregard for his own personal safety and was largely responsible for the successful beating off of this counter-attack. His actions and courage which were far beyond the call of military duty and courage are deserving of the highest praise.


Recommendation for immediate Distinguished Conduct Medal but downgraded at some point to an immediate Military Medal.
