During the fighting around Vitebsk in late 1943 Generalmajor Flörke succeeded in halting a major Soviet offensive that began on the 08.11.1943. Launched against the front east of the city, he managed to stop the Soviets in their tracks after they had penetrated through the German line as far as Poddubje. Instead of a breakthrough, the Soviets merely pushed back the German lines a little bit west of Lake Wymno. Generalmajor Flörke would receive the Knights’ Cross for this success.
