Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Lieutenant-Colonel
Unit:
19th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, Canadian Army
Awarded on:
February 1st, 1945
Recommendation:
During all stages of the assault in France and the days immediately following, this officer's regiment was in support of the advance of the North Shore Regiment. His steady, cheerful manner under fire and his sound advice and ready, efficient co-operation were assets beyond value to all under his command and to those of the infantry whom he was supporting and with whom he came in contact. On one occasion, due to his quick thinking, he used his Observation Post tank to enable the infantry to bring back to cover Major V.C. Hamilton, 16 Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers, who had been wounded by snipers. This he did by interposing his Observation Post tank between Major Hamilton and the snipers, thus saving further casualties. His quick and efficient application of fire without consideration of personal risk was a material factor in the successes obtained.
