Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Private
Unit:
"A" Company, The Stormont Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders, 9th Canadian Infantry Brigade, 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, Canadian Army
Recommendation:
In the Nijmegen salient on the night 11/12 January 1945, Private Edward Davis Scott, "A" company, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders, conducted himself with great skill and gallantry thereby saving his outpost, personally killing one German officer and a corporal, wounding one other rank and taking him prisoner.
It was a dark, moonless, night and snowing heavily. At 0544 hours, Private Scott perceived an enemy patrol in snow suits creeping up the ditch toward him. He warned his companion and held his fire until the enemy were thirty feet away. The German officer put his head up to observe and was killed instantly by a bullet fired by Private Scott. The German patrol then fired Bazookas and machine guns at Private Scott and his comrade who returned the fire and held to their post.
The enemy soldier who fired the Bazooka was defiladed and could not be hit. Private Scott, without a snow suit, and showing complete disregard for his personal safety, left his position and under covering fire from his companion, went forward and killed the enemy soldier, a Non-Commissioned Officer, in a hand to hand fight.
As a result of Private Edward Davis Scott's coolness and courage in ambushing the patrol, followed by his bold attack on them, the enemy patrol abandoned their weapons and withdrew. This soldier then volunteered to follow up the enemy, which he did, enabling the recovery of two enemy dead and one seriously wounded, who provided much needed identification and information.
