Captain
"Received for extraordinary achievement as a pilot of a B-17 Flying Fortress. He was cited for returning his bomber to base after a high altitude bombing attack on an aircraft engine plant at Munich, Germany, on Sept 22. Confronted by intense and accurate anti-airforce fire, an engine was disabled, and his view obstructed by sprayed fluid from a damaged hydraulic system. Regaining his position in his formation, he skillfully eturned his bomber and crew safely to base despite the loss of another engine through exhaustion of fuel and flak damage to his controls, brakes, and tire."
Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC)
