Awarded for his actions during the Battle of France. During the forcing of the Maas river he crossed over with two Zügen and crushed a number of French bunkers on the opposite bank over the course of a 4 hour battle. By doing so he enabled his Division to swiftly advance into northern France. He also went on to distinguish himself at Hannut, Cambrai and in the Vosges mountains.
