Citation:
"The skill, enthusiasm and personal example always shown by Captain Bowery were never more truly demonstrated than at Dieppe on 19 August 1942. Even before touching down, his company (the right) of The Royal Hamilton Light Infantry, came under fire and suffered heavily.
On the beach it at once came under murderous frontal and flanking fire at point blank range from rifles, machine guns and infantry guns. Without hesitation he led the survivors in a dash for his objective.
He was killed instantly.
His devoted company never got off the beach but held it in the broad open at frightful cost for the rest of the day, thus preventing Germans dug in at the foot of the west cliff from counter-attacking down the length of the beach from west to east.
Captain Bowery was the ideal infantry officer. He had the gift to inspire men. It was this inspiration that kept his shattered company in action long after his death."
