Citation:
"On the morning of 12 August 1944, The Royal Hamilton Light Infantry attacked a feature about a mile due east of the town of Barbery, in Normandy.
Shortly after the battalion had consolidated its position, the enemy counter-attacked in force with heavy mortar and artillery support. At this time the forward observation officer with the left forward company became a casualty and his communications broke down.
With no regard for his personal safety, Captain Brown then came forward, and personally directing the concentrated fire of his six mortars, was responsible for breaking up the counter-attack and making it impossible for the enemy to penetrate the battalion position.
During the entire action, Captain Brown moved from one position to another under very heavy fire and was largely responsible for the successful defence of the feature and thus making possible a further advance of the battalion the following day."
