Unit:
Fireman, ss Port Nicholson, Port Line ltd.
Awarded on:
December 22nd, 1942
Citation:
"The ship was torpedoed in darkness by a submarine and was so badly damaged that the Master ordered her to be abandoned.
An Officer, who had been badly hurt by the explosion, was trapped in the stokehold. Blundell, hearing his cries for help, descended hand over hand down the ash hoist, reached him, and helped him to the deck, thus saving his life. To all appearances the ship was about to sink and had she done so during the fireman's descent, he would certainly have been drowned.
An escorting ship picked up the crew."
