At the end of October 1943 the 267. Infanterie-Division was involved in defensive combat in its positions at Kritschew (southeast of Mogilev) along the Ssosh river. During a major Soviet attack Obergefreiter Otto Greese was able to prevent a Soviet penetration from his defensive position. Furthermore he was also able to push the Soviets back in a boldly led counterthrust, which he led while at the head of just a few men. He would be awarded the Knight’s Cross for this action.
