Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Flying Officer
Unit:
No. 179 Squadron, Royal Air Force
Awarded on:
May 5th, 1944
Recommendation:
"One night in September 1943, whilst on an anti submarine patrol, a U Boat was sighted. After illuminating the vessel with the Leigh light, heavy anti aircraft fire was experienced, but despite this an accurate attack was delivered with gallantry and determination. On a more recent operation in November 1943, another enemy submarine was located in the Atlantic. Part of the aircraft’s equipment was almost unserviceable and conditions poor. Nevertheless an attack was pressed home with skill and determination, despite a difficult and hazardous approach. This officer has shown the keenest enthusiasm for flying throughout his tour of duty.”
