Elijah W. Lewins entered active service at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana on September 29th, 1942. He left for England on February 6th, 1944, to arrive there on February 10th. He returned to the United States on July 17th, 1944 to arrive there on July 27th.
During his service in England he operated as Tail-gunner of the Boeing B-17 "Swamp Fire" (A/C # 42-32024 - Serial # 20292 - Fuselage Code WA-L), 524th Bomb Squadron, 379th Bombardment Group, 41st Combat Wing, 8th U.S. Army Air Force, on 30 of its 33 operational sorties.
He was honorably discharged from active service as Staff Sergeant on October 11th, 1945 at Army Air Force Separation Base San Bernardino, California.
