Biography

Sergeant (Wireless Operator) John Albert Francis, son of John Albert and Alice Maud Francis, of Colchester, Essex.
He died on Saturday 26 June 1943 at 0.115 am while on a mission to Gelsenkirchen in Germany at the age of 20. Following an attack by a night fighter, their Lancaster R5572-ZN-M crashed near the village of Baak. He and the rest of the crew were buried in Steenderen General Cemetery. One crew member managed to leave the aircraft and was taken prisoner of war.

Inscription on his headstone: 'DEAR IS THE ONE WHO HAS GONE. IN OUR HEARTS WE WILL KEEP HIM AS THE YEARS ROLL ON'
