The following press article describes why Grünewald would receive the Knight’s Cross…
“As already reported, the Führer has awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross to Oberfeldwebel Grünewald, commander of a Sturmgeschütz, at the suggestion of the supreme commander of the Luftwaffe, Reichsmarschall Göring.
The justification for his award describes his actions as follows:
“Oberfeldwebel Grünewald has already proved himself as a consistently reliable soldier in the combat of the Luftwaffe-Feld-Division Meindl. With his Sturmgeschütz he destroyed 11 heavy tanks on the western front at close range and more in close combat.”"
