Awarded for his achievements during the battle of France but also, and especially for, a number of successful special missions during the Battle of Britain. Flying with the Ju 88, an example of such missions was his low-level raid (i.e. releasing bombs at an 80 metre altitude!) against the heavily-protected Standard Motor Company factory near Birmingham. He flew another such mission against a factory near Coventry. Despite heavy anti-aircraft fire that slightly wounded him, Höflinger nonetheless was able to complete the mission while scoring two direct hits on a factory building.
