At the start of May 1942 he and his Bataillon had a major share in the great successes of his Division in the east of the Crimean peninsula. Fighting at the head of his Bataillon, he stormed past the ordered attack objective on his own initiative and without artillery support. In doing so he succeeded in penetrating into the heavily fortified and toughly defended enemy positions.
