Walter Neusüss was a Luftwaffe radio operator. From the summer of 1939 until May 29th, 1940, he served with 2./Kampfgeschwader 26. On that day, near Narvik in Norway, he was shot down in his Heinkel He 111 HF KW nr. 3158 (Oberleutnant Egon Schmidt, Feldwebel Harald Lipp, Unteroffizier Walter Neusüß and Unteroffizier Herbert Ranscht) by two Hawker Hurricanes of 46 Squadron RAF, flown by Drummond and Jameson. Unteroffizier Herbert Ranscht lost his life. With the other two crew members, Neusüsss managed to reach Sweden on foot where they were interned. July 12th, 1940, they were allowed to return to Germany. Subsequently, Walter Neusüss served with Kampfgeschwader 4 until the end of 1941. From January until April 1942 he was hospitalized in Königsberg to be posted to the Luftkriegsschule 7 (LKS 7, School of aerial warfare) in Langenlebarn near Tulln in Austria in May 1942. April or May 1945 near Salzburg, he was made a Prisoner of War by the Americans. He was credited with 283 operational missions and he ultimately attained the rank of Oberfeldwebel.
