For outstanding ability and gallantry as a platoon commander and conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, on 4 and 5 May 44.
During the advance down Norfolk Spur and the attack on G.P.T. Ridge on 4 May, Sgt. Davis'platoon of "A"Coy was left to contain an enemy bunker position. When the advance was checked and in danger of stoppping, this N.C.o. was sent to the right flank to make a way through the jungle. Under heavy fire from snipers and L.M.G. he led his platoon into position, accounted for many enemy, and by cool and efficient leadership restored the situation and enabled the advance to continue.
During the final assault on the enemy position, Sgt. Davis' personal example, when many of his platoon had become casualies, caused the remainder to carry with the bayonet 2 bunkers which were vital to the defence.
On 5 May Sgt. Davis' platoon was under heavy fire and he himself was shot though the leg. He refused to go own until the situation was in hand, and continued to direct his platoon under fire with a cool disregard of danger which inspired his men to a high degree."
