The following wartime excerpt (dated 30.08.1940) describes why Lingner received the Knight’s Cross…

“On the 10.05.1940 Oberleutnant Lingner found himself alone in the rear of far numerically superior enemy forces with only meagre numbers of troops at his own disposal. Although the situation was very clearly weighted against him, he made a bold decision to conduct an immediate and ruthless attack against the strong enemy forces. By doing this he enabled reinforcements to be brought up and ensured the success of the entire operation. The victory here was crucial for the smooth flow of the wider scheme of operations in the area.”
