Leutnant Herzer was part of the Kampfgruppe 'Reinefarth' and KIA during the Warsaw uprising in Aug/Sep 1944.

Awarded for his actions on the 29.07.1941 against strong opposing forces that had broken through the boundary between the I. & II./Schützen-Regiment 25 in the Wopj sector. Leading his Pionierzug into battle, he eliminated part of the Soviet force during an energetically led counterthrust with close-combat weapons and hand grenades. The rest were taken prisoner. The end result of this action was that the danger that his Bataillon would be outflanked and rolled up by the Soviets was averted. Herzer would be recognized appropriately for this feat.
