Awarded for his actions during a 10 day long period of bitter defensive combat near Mogilev in February-March 1944. Time and time again he was able to identify the critical situations along the sparsely held German frontline and eliminate Soviet breakthroughs (preferably from flanking positions) on his own initiative. Through such deeds he played a major role in stabilizing the German defensive positions in his sector during this fighting.
