During the defensive battles of the 8. Panzer-Division in early 1945 Obergefreiter Jannes destroyed 2 tanks in close combat on the 23. & 26.03.1945. He would then destroy another 4 tanks in close combat on the 16./17.04.1945. Thus, by raising his total to 6 tanks destroyed in close combat, he was automatically qualified for the Knight’s Cross in accordance with the Führerbefehl of 07.03.1945.
